| MQRES Modelling Climate Change Impacts on Australian Forests PhD Scholarship |
|
Scholarship Description
A PhD scholarship is available at Division of ELS to (a) investigate experimentally the impacts of CO2 and water availability on Australian forest species; and (b) to use this information to develop ecophysiologically-based models of climate change impacts on Australian forests over the next century. Australian forests provide a range of ecosystem services, such as wood production, carbon sequestration and protection of water catchments. Climate change is highly likely to modify how forests function, and land managers urgently need information about how these ecosystem services will be affected. MQRES scholarships are available to Australian and international students. Applicants should have an Australian first class honours undergraduate degree, or equivalent (Masters with research component) with a background in plant physiology or plant ecology and a strong numerical aptitude. International students will receive tuition and compulsory health cover for the scholarship tenure. | Monash Department Scholarship (Civil Eng) |
|
Scholarship Description
Biofilters (vegetated soil-based filters) are an emerging low-energy treatment technology and are being increasingly implemented around Australia, particularly for urban stormwater management. While design of biofilters for removal of pollutants such as suspended solids, heavy metals and even nitrogen is now well understood, their phosphorus removal performance is variable, largely because the process are not well understood. Since phosphorus is present in all wastewater types and is the key pollutant of some receiving water bodies (eg lakes), it is essential we improve our understanding of behaviour of phosphorus in biofilters. This research aims to understand the fundamental physical, chemical and biological processes.
