Australian forests provide a range of ecosystem services, such as wood production, carbon sequestration and protection of water catchments. Climate change is highly likely to modify how forests function, and land managers urgently need information about how these ecosystem services will be affected. MQRES scholarships are available to Australian and international students. Applicants should have an Australian first class honours undergraduate degree, or equivalent (Masters with research component) with a background in plant physiology or plant ecology and a strong numerical aptitude. International students will receive tuition and compulsory health cover for the scholarship tenure.
Reference Number: 3675
Study Subject: Modelling Climate Change Impacts on Australian Forests
Web Address: http://www.research.mq.edu.au/students/scholarships
Provided By: Higher Degree Research Unit
To be undertaken at: Macquarie University.
Level: Post Graduate
Availability

This scholarship is offered once only to one person. While design of biofilters for removal of pollutants such as suspended solids, heavy metals and even nitrogen is now well understood, their phosphorus removal performance is variable, largely because the process are not well understood. Since phosphorus is present in all wastewater types and is the key pollutant of some receiving water bodies (eg lakes), it is essential we improve our understanding of behaviour of phosphorus in biofilters. The knowledge gained will support formulation of policy by Indonesian government agencies designed to restrict, manage and/or monitor these pig movements. This PhD project is a component of a large project hosted by the University of Sydney and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) that seeks to improve TAD disease control in Eastern Indonesia through use of risk and economic assessments to support policy development. It will involve several fully funded trips to project sites in West Timor, Flores, Lembata and Sumba.
